Foreword

Recently, I came across an article on Medium.com titled, "AI Will Destroy the Art of Novel Writing (Here’s How It Happens) — Starting With Airport Franchises." The author argued that publishers could use AI to analyze the writing styles and plot structures of bestselling authors, producing new series in a fraction of the time. This approach not only significantly reduces costs but also eliminates the delays and expenses associated with ghostwriting. As AI’s marketing capabilities improve, with precise data analysis and targeted social media strategies, it can reach audiences more effectively than ever before.

This topic reminded me of Christopher Nolan’s classic “Interstellar”, which was recently re-released and sparked renewed discussion. One of the most unforgettable scenes is when Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey) hears his daughter say, “Go, Dad, you still have a mission to complete.” Then, at the end, he sets off with the repaired robot to search for the lonely Amelia on Edmunds Planet. It made me wonder: will there ever be a sequel to this film? If it were directed by George Lucas, we’d probably already have episodes one, two, three, and four, along with prequels, spin-offs, series, and animated adaptations. But given Nolan’s signature style—seen in “Inception”, “Tenet”, and “The Prestige”—the likelihood of a sequel seems slim.

It was precisely this idea, combined with my frequent use of various GPT tools, that inspired me to try writing a novel with ChatGPT. While I had already explored many of ChatGPT's functionalities, I had not yet tested its writing capabilities in-depth. However, generating tens of thousands of words with AI is far from a simple matter of typing in a prompt. As mentioned earlier, even if a publisher trained an AI model extensively on “Moby-Dick”, for example, it wouldn’t be as easy as typing, "Please write a 200,000-word novel in 100 chapters inspired by the style of Moby-Dick but set in modern times," and getting a masterpiece in return.

In reality, AI writing is a specialized skill, which is why "prompt engineers" in the U.S. can earn between $250,000 and $375,000 per year(Referring to online information, I hope some readers can confirm it, but at least this market does not exist in Taiwan.). This figure highlights one undeniable fact: producing high-quality, long-form content with AI is no easy task.

With that in mind, I decided to challenge myself and ChatGPT-4o to create a continuation of “Interstellar”, starting with a 10,000-word short story. My method involved two steps:

1. Outline Development: I provided a detailed explanation of the story’s background and desired direction, asking GPT to draft a chapter-by-chapter outline. If the initial outline didn’t meet expectations, I adjusted it accordingly.
2. Content Creation and Refinement: Based on the finalized outline, I constructed each chapter, optimizing and expanding the content iteratively. The entire process required repeated revisions, with final polishing done using human creativity to ensure logical consistency and narrative flow.
